Press Release – Women’s Interfaith Workshop & Towards Dementia Friendly Faith Communities

Press Release – Date 20th November 2014

Women’s Interfaith Workshop 12 November 2014 & Towards Dementia Friendly Faith Communities 17th November 2014

Redbridge Faith Forum held two informative and successful events in November.  The first was the Women’s Group which took place at the Singh Sabha London East Gurdwara, 722 High Road, Seven Kings on the 12th November 2014. Parminder Kaur Kondral and a group of Sikh women made all most welcome.

They spoke confidently about the central teachings of the Sikh religion. They answered the many questions asked, increasing the knowledge and understanding for those not of the Sikh faith.  They introduced the main topic for the session ‘Feasts, Festivals and Holy Days ~ What do we celebrate?’ by telling the group of the main Sikh Festivals.  Women from different faiths then spoke with enthusiasm some of the major faith festivals and celebrations. This addressed many misconceptions about which were the major festivals and what was also a cultural tradition but not necessarily a religious teaching. Our generous hosts fed us well with Pakoras, biscuits and tea as well as inviting all to join them in the langar for a most welcome vegetarian meal. This event was supported by LBR former Area 5 committee.

The second event was the third of five sessions raising awareness on dementia as part of the project ‘towards dementia friendly faith communities’. This session was held at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (RJJC), Woodford Bridge Road on the 17th November where everyone was made to feel most welcome.  The session had been organised as a joint venture between RFF and RJJC to mark mitzvah Day ~ a day for good deeds.  Alli Anthony of the Alzheimer’s Association once again gave an insightful presentation and encouraged those present to become dementia friends and dementia champions.  By becoming a friend and or a champion the ‘good deed’ would be long lasting. The information, empathy and skills developed would serve each faith community in growing as a dementia friendly community. As at previous sessions there was a good representation from different faith groups. The fourth of the five repeat sessions will be held at the Singh Sabha London East Gurdwara, 722 High Road, Seven Kings on January 22nd 2015.
